When he has finished reading the original (unadapted) text, he should move on to the next adapted excerpt. And so on. There is no need to go back to review the material. One is just supposed to keep on reading.

Когда мне исполнилось три года (when I turned three years old), родители на день рождения подарили мне красный трёхколёсный велосипед (my parents gave me for my birthday a red bicycle that had three wheels: «three-wheeled»).
Я, конечно, была очень рада (I, naturally, was very happy). Я сразу села на велосипед (I immediately got on it) и поехала по комнате (and started riding it in the room). Это было совсем не трудно (which was not at all difficult).
Но, доехав до конца комнаты (but, having reached the wall: «the end of the room»), я не смогла развернуться (I couldn’t turn around). Пришлось слезать с велосипеда (I had to get off the bicycle) и разворачивать его руками (and turn it around with my hands). Помню, что папа очень смеялся (I remember my father laughing hard), наблюдая мои действия (when he was watching me; действие — action, movement).
С тех пор я часто ходила гулять во двор с велосипедом (since that time I would often go outside with my bicycle; двор — yard, court; outdoors). Это было так здорово — ехать (it felt/was so great to ride), а не идти пешком (not to walk)!
Папа обмотал мне велосипед белыми шнурками (my father wrapped the bicycle with white laces; шнурок — cord, string), и велосипед стал совсем красивым (and the bicycle looked like perfection: «became completely beautiful»). Такого больше ни у кого не было (no one else had a bike like that).
Я каталась на нём несколько лет (I rode it for several years), пока не выросла (until I grew up). А потом на этом велосипеде катался мой младший брат (later on it was ridden by my younger brother /active voice/).
